From the truck cab to the world of stock photography
At first, I simply wanted to capture the places I was seeing on the road. Driving across Europe, I found myself in small towns, big cities, by the sea, in the mountains and in places I probably would never have seen if it weren’t for my job. I wanted to hold on to those views, so I simply started taking photos.
Over time, another need appeared. I spend a lot of time in the truck cab while I’m on the road, and I wanted to find something that would let me use that time in a more creative way. The number of photos kept growing, and I started wondering whether they might also have value for someone other than me.
That’s how I found my way into the world of stock photography. It quickly turned out, however, that taking photos was only the beginning. I had to learn what stock photo agencies were looking for, what makes stock photography different from simply taking photos, how to prepare my files and what to keep in mind while shooting. So I started looking for information, taking courses and gaining knowledge that I could later put into practice.
And so something that started with a simple desire to capture the views from the road gradually turned into another passion — and into thousands of photos that can now travel much further than my own hard drive. And although I already have quite a lot of experience behind me, I’m still learning, testing, making mistakes and drawing conclusions from them. In photography, there is always another way to see something, something you can do better and another way to tell a story through an image.
The road keeps bringing me new frames
One of the things I love most about taking photos on the road is that I never really know what will end up in front of my lens that day. Sometimes it will be interesting architecture in the heart of a big city, another time a small town, a landscape I pass along the way, a flower growing beside a parking area or a detail I might not even have noticed under different circumstances.
That is exactly why my portfolio is so varied. I photograph cities, landmarks, nature, plants, landscapes, details and textures — anything that catches my eye along the way. Over time, I have also learned to look at these images a little differently. Today, I think not only about whether I like a photo, but also about where and how someone else might be able to use it. Stock photography has taught me that the value of an image does not always lie in how spectacular it looks. Sometimes what matters most is simply that it can help tell a story, show a place or illustrate a specific subject.
My photos keep moving on, and every image finds its way to a different corner of the world..
I never know where I might come across one of my photos again or how it will be used.
Every photo that makes its way into a stock library begins to take on a life of its own. I never really know what kind of story it might help illustrate. It could appear in an article, on a website, in advertising materials, a publication or a project created somewhere on the other side of the world.
The biggest thrill comes when I unexpectedly come across one of my own photos online. I recognize the image and remember the exact place and moment from the road when I took it, but this time it is being used in a completely different context. Every time it happens, it gives me a huge sense of satisfaction and reminds me why I started with stock photography in the first place. The photo stops being just a memory from my travels and becomes useful to someone else as well.
I make my photographs available through several stock agencies because each one reaches a slightly different audience and gives my images another chance to find their place. The further they can travel, the greater the chance that someone, somewhere, will see in them exactly what they happen to need.
